It all adds up for Bognor college maths star
John Newman (13) received the recognition of his problem-solving skills from the UK Mathematics Trust.
He finished in the top 300 out of 250,000 secondary school pupils around the country to be classed by the trust as an outstandingly successful candidate. He was also awarded a certificate of distinction.

Hide AdHis final ranking was achieved in the trust's 2008 junior mathematical olympiad.
This consisted of a two-hour paper with two sections. The first had ten questions which required candidates to think hard but only give the answers.
The second had six questions and fully detailed solutions were required.
John said: "I've always been quite good at maths. I enjoy the harder challenges. Once I have done them, I feel happy that I have figured them out."

Hide AdJohn qualified for the olympiad after doing well in a one hour initial paper. He hopes to use his maths skills for a career with computers or cars.
