With your help, your local readers will be aware of the actions that are being taken to future proof the gas network and they could even be a part of it.
At SGN, we manage the network that distributes natural and green gas to 5.9 million homes and businesses across the south of England and Scotland. Great Britain’s gas industry is rapidly changing due to decreasing supplies, increased use of renewable energy sources and changes in consumer demand.

Hide AdOur ‘Real-Time Networks’ project aims to develop the gas network to meet the needs of our rapidly changing gas industry. This could result in more efficient gas delivery to customers – and hence reduced cost of gas across Great Britain. To do this we are collecting information about our network’s performance today, such as gas quality and flow, and how the network is likely to be affected by renewable energy technology. This information will contribute towards our delivery management calculations. Our south east gas pipe network has been chosen for this, where we will install sensor technology along our gas pipe network.
We must also establish current customer gas needs to ensure we can meet changing consumer demands for the future. To do this we are recording how much gas is used and when by connecting small data loggers at customer meters. Anyone living in Sussex who uses gas and has a credit meter (not smart or pre-paid) can apply to take part via our website, sgn.co.uk/real-time-networks. Participants will receive a £40 Love2Shop voucher and a free carbon monoxide alarm worth £20 to thank them for taking part.
