Time for changes in voting system

I do not always see eye to eye in the town council chamber with councillor Tony Squires, but I think the view he expressed in his letter (Gazette, May 16) was very perceptive.

He calls for changes in the current voting and candidate selection system. Since my election two years ago, I have found difficulty in managing a reasonable perspective on behalf of those constituents I represent. This dilemma is caused by the intrigues and prejudicial restraints imposed upon the members under the code relating to “outside” and “political” interests.

I gather from correspondence and the current controversy over leisure/entertainment facilities that most of the public are, understandably, confused with the responsibility for issues which may lie within each of the three authorities’ (parish, district and county) remit.

That members can be elected to a multiplicity of seats within and from outside the area they represent, gives the electorate a lack of confidence in the present decision making.
