This marked another Project EDWARD ‘No Deaths on the Roads of Europe’ week in which the team was encouraged to be out as often as possible to remind motorists to observe speed limits. ––– Also in the news, GCSE students across the area have been celebrating after receiving their results; an Angmering grandfather has taken to caring for hedgehogs to help him overcome a spinal injury; and a memorial to honour the victims of the Shoreham Airshow crash is almost ready for installation on the banks of the River Adur ––– During that week the team managed six sessions between Monday and Wednesday (when four sessions took place), with each of the operators taking part volunteering for extra sessions. As a result, 44 offenders were logged over the three days, no less than 17 of these being at a well-known blackspot – Salvington Hill – with one offender clocked at 48mph. In Marine Drive in Goring, a learner motorcyclist was seen riding at around 40mph and gesticulating offensively to the operators. They were unable to complete taking the vehicle’s number plate details at that time but were able to do so when the accommodating rider then came back in the opposite direction, still making rude gestures. In Grand Avenue, a Ford Transit van was clocked at 47mph but, when an operator checked the number plate details on the DVLA website, he found that the road tax for the van had expired at the end of April. This vehicle’s MOT history showed a long list of defects, some of them serious and, while it is possible for a vehicle to go for a MOT test untaxed, the fact that this one had received a clean bill of health looked suspicious. The West Downs Neighbourhood Watch Task Force will be on road closure duties at the Worthing Carnival over the bank holiday, and has been supplemented by a number of volunteers from the Neighbourhood Watch.
